MOSCOW: Nawrocki Called Trump the Only Leader Capable of Talking to Putin. Polish President Nawrocki stated that he doesn't consider himself "the best negotiator," but would meet with Putin for the sake of his country's security. He named Trump as the most suitable interlocutor for the Russian president.
Only American leader Donald Trump can negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Polish President Karol Nawrocki stated in an interview with Radio Zet.
The Polish leader said that he had spoken with Trump several times over the past month and was under the impression that he "understands what's going on" in the context of the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine.
"President Donald Trump is the only leader in the free world who can negotiate with Vladimir Putin. Of course, the direction of these negotiations, the instruments he chooses—and I urge him to be as tough as possible on the Russian Federation—is his decision, his choice," the Polish president said (quoted by Wiadomosci).
Nawrocki admitted that he doesn't consider himself "the best negotiator due to my track record and experience," but would meet with Putin if Poland's security depended on it.
In February, during the presidential campaign, Nawrocki said he was ready to sit down with Putin because that was the "role of a responsible politician": "I would think about Poland's interests and nothing else."
After assuming office in early August, Nawrocki "challenged" Prime Minister Donald Tusk over who should handle foreign policy and represent Poland in negotiations with Trump, the Financial Times reported. Tusk himself noted that he disagreed with the president on almost all issues. Following the Putin-Trump summit in Alaska on August 15, the prime minister declared that the "game for the future" of Ukraine, the security of Poland, and all of Europe had entered a decisive phase.
The Anchorage summit marked the first face-to-face talks between the US and Russian presidents in four years. Before this, Putin and Trump spoke on the phone several times.
