MOSCOW: Telegram founder Pavel Durov has revealed the name of the person who asked him to "silence" Romanian conservative channels ahead of the elections. According to the entrepreneur, Nicolas Lerner, the head of the French Foreign Intelligence Service, contacted him and voiced this request. Pavel Durov has again accused French intelligence of trying to interfere in European politics
The Telegram founder said that French foreign intelligence met with him allegedly to combat terrorism and child pornography:
French foreign intelligence confirmed that they met with me - allegedly to combat terrorism and child pornography. In fact, child porn was never even mentioned. They did need the addresses of terrorist suspects in France, but their main focus was always geopolitics.
"Nicolas Lerner, the head of French intelligence, asked me to ban conservative voices in Romania before the elections. I refused,” he wrote on the social network X.
France commented on Durov’s statement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that it rejects these accusations and calls for respect for Romanian democracy.
“Completely unfounded accusations against France that it is allegedly interfering in the presidential elections in Romania are being spread on Telegram and Twitter. France categorically rejects these accusations,” the department wrote on X.
French diplomats noted that Paris has always supported Romania in the issue of joining the European Union and in the security sphere.
Romania, Moldova, Ukraine
Recall that earlier the messenger refused to block opposition-minded channels and users in European countries, in particular in Romania.
