TEL AVIV: It is alleged that two rounds of direct and indirect talks took place between Israeli and Syrian officials. One of them took place in Azerbaijan, where Israel was represented by the IDF Chief of Operations, Major General Oded Basiuk. Representatives of the Syrian government and Turkey were also present at the meeting.
According to sources, Israel is currently also negotiating with the Syrian authorities, mediated by the United Arab Emirates, on the issue of Damascus' possible accession to the Abraham Accords.
The day before, during a meeting in Riyadh, US President Donald Trump directly invited Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to join these agreements. He later told reporters aboard Air Force One: “I told [Sharaa], I hope you will join as soon as you stabilize. And he said yes. But they have a lot of work ahead of them.” Channel 12 notes that Israel is now considering the prospect of Syria leaving Iran’s sphere of influence and its possible rapprochement with the United States. According to Israeli sources, such a development could also have a positive effect on relations between Israel and Turkey, since Ankara is taking part in new negotiations.
