OKINAWA: Mr. Koja Elected Okinawa Governor: Koja, the Morning After His Election Victory: "Quite Surprised" by Record-High 420,000 Votes; Vows to Move Forward as Representative of 1.46 Million People (Okinawa Gubernatorial Election)
On the morning of the 14th—the day after the Okinawa gubernatorial election—Mr. Genta Koja (42), who had just won his first term, spoke to reporters at his support group's office in Naha City. He expressed his aspirations, stating, "As the representative of the 1.46 million people [of the prefecture], I want to listen carefully to everyone's voices and move forward on issues regarding daily life, the economy, and child-rearing support."
He had spent the time until the early hours of the morning making rounds to thank his supporters. "It is gradually sinking in. Seeing the vote count made me realize the weight of the fact that so many people wrote 'Genta Koja' on their ballots," he said.
He secured just over 420,000 votes, a record high. "I was quite surprised. I think it reflects the fact that the people of the prefecture were seeking a breath of fresh air," he said, adding with a serious expression, "I keenly feel the weight of the responsibility."
