BERLIN: The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party won a landslide victory in the Saxony-Anhalt state parliamentary elections. According to preliminary official data from the regional electoral commission, the AfD garnered 43.8% of the vote.
This result was an all-time high for the party in regional elections and double the result of five years ago. Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) finished second with 17.2%, the worst result for conservatives in the state. Compared to the 2021 elections, the CDU lost more than half its electorate and failed to win a single direct mandate in any district.
The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) came in third with 9.3%. Next come the Greens (8.9%), the Left Party (8.6%), and the BSW (5.3%), which also entered the state parliament.

On Sunday, September 6, regional parliamentary elections were held in Saxony-Anhalt. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) took first place, winning the state's premier for the first time. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which is part of Germany's ruling coalition, came in second.
Saxony-Anhalt is not just one of Germany's 16 states, but the industrial heart of eastern Germany, home to a major chemical cluster and production sites for giants such as Daimler Truck and Novartis. An AfD victory in this region would give the far-right real power at the state level for the first time since 1949 and would be a serious blow to Chancellor Merz's position. Through the Bundesrat, the AfD will be able to influence pan-German politics, including advocating for the lifting of sanctions against Russia. That is why all of Germany followed these elections.
