Israel Channel 13 military observer Alon Ben David writes that nearly three years of war have seriously exhausted the IDF. According to him, the army maintains approximately 53,000 reserve troops daily and simultaneously maintains a presence in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria.
The cost of one month of reserve service over the past year has been estimated at approximately 2.1 billion shekels. Meanwhile, the government and a significant portion of the opposition advocate maintaining the three "security belts," but the sources of funding for this policy remain unclear.
According to Ben David, the IDF believes that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not interested in ending any of the current conflicts and may attempt to escalate the situation again, most likely in Gaza, in order to disrupt or delay the elections. Senior military officials, the observer asserts, have declared that they do not intend to support "a new and unnecessary war." At the same time, according to Ben David, Chief of the General Staff of Israel Eyal Zamir will face a serious test in the event of a new confrontation with the government.
