India and Indonesia share a common stance against terrorism: PM Modi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday emphasized that India and Indonesia share a strong commitment to combat terrorism. PM Modi thanked the Indonesian leadership for its support during the Pahalgam terror attack. Addressing the Indonesian Parliament, the Indian Prime Minister also stressed the need for urgent reforms of the UN Security Council in the rapidly changing global landscape.

Addressing a joint session of the Indonesian Parliament (Komplex Parlemen Republik Indonesia), PM Modi said, "India and Indonesia have always shared a clear and consistent position on issues like terrorism. Indonesia stood firmly with India during the cowardly terrorist attack in Pahalgam last year. I express my gratitude to President Prabowo and all of you."

He said that the two countries are working together to combat terrorism through the Joint Working Group mechanism. PM Modi further said, “By enhancing cooperation in areas such as intelligence, cyber threats, terror financing, and de-radicalization, we can strengthen the forces of peace in the world.” He reiterated India's commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific and emphasized the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in the region.

Referring to the rapid changes taking place in the global order today, Prime Minister Modi said that countries like India and Indonesia aspire to equal participation and a more prominent role. He said, “In this global landscape, India firmly believes that reform of the UNSC cannot be delayed any further.”

He emphasized the long-standing partnership between India and Indonesia, saying, “Our two countries gained independence at almost the same time: Indonesia in 1945 and India in 1947.” PM Modi said that when it came to sovereignty as independent nations, India emerged as a strong voice in support of Indonesia's independence movement at the United Nations.

Together, India and Indonesia will fill humanity with new energy.

These agreements cover strategic areas such as defense, electronic voting machines, agriculture, maritime security, and space cooperation. President Subianto also honored PM Modi with his country's highest civilian honor, the "Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia."

PM Modi, who arrived in Jakarta on a two-day visit to Indonesia, was given a very warm welcome. President Subianto greeted PM Modi with a hug. Following this, important bilateral talks were held between the two heads of state, during which several major agreements between India and Indonesia were implemented.
Today is the second day of PM Modi's visit to Indonesia. After meeting with President Subianto, Prime Minister Modi will arrive at the Indonesian Parliament, the "Komplex Parlemen Republik Indonesia," where he will participate in a special event and address the parliamentarians. This address is expected to give a new direction to the India-Indonesia democratic partnership, as well as the historical and strategic ties between the two countries. In the final event of the day, Prime Minister Modi will address the Indian community in Jakarta. In his address, the Prime Minister is expected to emphasize India's development journey, India's growing role globally, and strengthening India-Indonesia cultural and people-to-people ties.

Prime Minister Modi is on a three-day visit to Indonesia. He arrived in Jakarta on Monday. On Tuesday, he held talks with President Prabowo Subianto and reviewed all aspects of the "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership." This partnership covers areas such as trade and investment, defense and security, maritime cooperation, digital and financial technology, energy, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, space, critical minerals and rare earths, culture, tourism, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges.

Thus, the second day of the Prime Minister's visit is considered extremely important from political, strategic, and public relations perspectives. It is expected to further strengthen the comprehensive strategic relationship between India and Indonesia.
