MOSCOW: New offense prevention measures, enshrined in federal legislation, will be introduced in Russia. These measures include combating the distortion of historical truth and preventing evasion of the duty to defend the Fatherland. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the law on this.
This decision will expand the list of key offense prevention measures to include the following grounds:
fulfillment of military duty and military service;
ensuring the protection of historical truth and preventing the diminishment of the people's heroism in defending the Fatherland. "Attempts to forget who truly defeated Nazism and stopped the extermination of the peoples of Europe in gas chambers and death camps are part of the unfriendly West's hybrid war against the multinational Soviet people, who, at the cost of their lives, saved the entire world from fascism. We will not allow this," State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin emphasized earlier.
According to him, the proposed solution will more effectively combat destructive propaganda aimed at falsifying history.
How will the authorities act in light of the new law? Vasily Piskarev, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Security, explained that crime prevention involves legal education, information, and preventative talks. Moreover, the deputy believes these measures are especially important when working with teenagers and young adults.
"It is crucial to use such tools promptly—even before someone breaks the law. Russia honors the memory of the defenders of the Fatherland and ensures the protection of historical truth, preventing the denigration of the people's heroism in defending their homeland," Piskarev stated.
State Duma Deputy Sergei Chizhov (United Russia) clarified in a comment to Rossiyskaya Gazeta that, along with appropriate discussions, preventative measures could include registration for preventative measures, visits for this purpose, and raising citizens' legal literacy and legal awareness. Prevention, he noted, could also be implemented in cyberspace. "Individuals with information about their actions that create the conditions for a crime but do not entail criminal liability may be issued an official warning," Chizhov added.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova previously stated that Moscow's opponents have launched a large-scale battle over historical memory, attempting to deprive Russia of its future prospects by distorting the events of the past.
