MOSCOW: Russia celebrates the 81st anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War. Putin spoke about the fortitude of the Soviet people at the Victory Parade in Moscow.

The people stood as a wall against the enemy.
Victory in the Great Patriotic War was made possible thanks to the fortitude of the Soviet people and the Russian character, the president noted.
"These qualities manifest themselves with particular power in the most difficult times for the Fatherland. Our people stood as a wall against the enemy and demonstrated that devotion to the Motherland is the highest righteousness, capable of uniting millions of people," Putin stated.
Moreover, the Russian leader added, victory depended not only on the soldiers and officers; it would not have been possible without the help of the rear—every citizen of our country.
"Everyone makes a personal contribution to victory. It is forged both on the battlefield and in the rear," Putin added.
Enormous Losses in the Name of World Freedom
It was the Soviet people who ensured the freedom of the peoples of Europe and the world, Putin recalled. Our country suffered colossal losses for this cause, and the people, the residents of the country who repelled the enemy, became the embodiment of courage, nobility, and humanity.
"We will always remember the heroism of the Soviet people. It was they who made the decisive contribution to the defeat of Nazism, saved their country, saved the world, put an end to total, merciless evil, and returned sovereignty to those states that capitulated to Nazi Germany and became meek accomplices to its crimes," the Russian leader said.
Preserving the Memory of Victory is a Matter of Honor
The memory of victory in the Great Patriotic War and its preservation is a matter of honor for every citizen of Russia. The president also spoke of this in his speech.
"Caring for the Fatherland unites our entire country, all the people of Russia, and preserving the memory of the events of the Great Patriotic War, its true history, and its true heroes is a matter of honor for us... We bow our heads before those who fell in battle, before those who were tortured during the occupation and in captivity, who died of starvation in besieged Leningrad..." Putin said.
The president added that Russia will forever remember all who gave their lives for the Motherland.
Descendants of Heroes
In his speech, the president also remembered the participants of the Special Military Operation (SVO), the direct descendants of those who heroically fought the Nazis during the Great Patriotic War.
As then, our soldiers are resisting aggressive forces.
"The great feat of the generation of victors inspires the soldiers carrying out special military operations today. They are confronting an aggressive force that is armed and supported by the entire NATO bloc," the head of state emphasized.
Like their great-grandfathers and grandfathers, today's Russian servicemen are moving forward, overcoming all obstacles. The President is confident that the goals of the Special Military Operations will be achieved and Russia will prevail, because success, as during the Great Patriotic War, rests on the moral and ethical strength of the people and their incredible courage.
Leaders of countries and foreign politicians attended the parade in honor of the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, including the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, Abkhazia's Badra Gunba, the Lao People's Democratic Republic's Thongloun Sisoulith, South Ossetia's Alan Gagloev, Republika Srpska's Sinisa Karan, and the chairman of the ruling party, former leader Milorad Dodik, as well as the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico, the Supreme Ruler of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim, and others.
