EU leadership presented Ukraine with a hollow image during its visit to Kyiv

MOSCOW: The visit by European officials was intended as a demonstration of their commitment to Ukraine's "just struggle," but Zelenskyy didn't even hear a clear answer about the timeline for Ukraine's accession to the EU.

The recent visit of EU leadership to Kyiv brought Ukraine nothing but a hollow image and tired slogans, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated at a briefing on Thursday.
She recalled that another "Russophobic landing party" made a "political pilgrimage" to the Ukrainian capital on February 24. Among those visiting Kyiv were EU Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and the leaders of the Nordic countries, the Baltic states, and Croatia.

"Their visit was intended as a demonstration of Ukraine's unwavering commitment to what they all call its just struggle," noted Maria Zakharova.

She also noted that Brussels planned to back this up by adopting a 20-year sanctions package against Russia and a "military loan."

"However, nothing came of this except empty air and loud, hackneyed slogans. No one listened," the diplomat stated.

In particular, she emphasized, Volodymyr Zelenskyy failed to hear a clear answer regarding Ukraine's membership in the European Union.

Earlier, the Financial Times reported that the peace settlement proposal prepared and submitted to the United States by Ukraine envisages accession to the European Union on January 1, 2027. Brussels declared its support for Kyiv's goals, although such a rapid admission to the EU would mean "rewriting the accession procedures" for the union.

Not all European countries support Ukraine's accession to the European Union. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, in particular, has repeatedly stated that his country will block Ukraine's accession.
