Putin and Lukashenko at the Supreme State Council meeting in Moscow

MOSCOW: The Presidents of Belarus and Russia, Alexander Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin, are participating in a meeting of the Supreme State Council (SSC) of the Union State.

The SSC is the highest governing body of the Union State, meeting at least once every two years. Since 2000, the SSC has been chaired by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
In addition to the heads of state, the participants in the SSC include the heads of parliament and government of the two countries. Earlier, the Belarusian leader's press service reported that today's meeting would discuss not only economic issues but also the implementation of the Union State Treaty through the end of this year, as well as a draft similar document through 2029.

The previous, jubilee, meeting of the Supreme State Council was held on December 6, 2024, in Minsk, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Union State Treaty. Since 2000, the council has held 25 meetings, including seven in the last 10 years.

The meeting's agenda includes a review of the progress of joint work within the framework of the comprehensive document "Guidelines for the Implementation of the Provisions of the Treaty on the Establishment of the Union State for 2024-2026." Furthermore, important decisions are planned on a number of practical issues related to the further development of integration cooperation in various fields.
