BERLIN: European diplomats have criticized U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's speech at the Munich Security Conference. According to the Financial Times, his remarks were seen as targeting an American audience rather than allies.
"This is not the answer we were looking for," a German diplomat told the newspaper, adding that the speech was more aimed at the American domestic audience than at allies. Also, according to the Financial Times, some of those present at Rubio's speech reacted "coldly" to his comments.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference on February 14, Rubio emphasized that the United States is not trying to distance itself from its allies, but rather seeks to renew and strengthen long-standing partnerships. According to him, the United States is charting a course towards a new era of prosperity and intends to move forward in this direction alongside Europe.
The US Secretary of State pointed out that the existing disagreements between Washington and European capitals are primarily caused by the US's serious concerns about Europe's future. However, he noted that the United States is interested in a strong Europe.
In addition, Rubio expressed concern about the transfer of sovereignty by the United States and its allies to international institutions. According to him, the increase in funding for social programs comes at the expense of reducing the countries' defense capabilities,
