UN: Nebenzya called the use of military force against Iran a violation of the UN Charter. Russia condemns the US policy of using military force against Iran, stated Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN.
The Permanent Representative also drew attention to the intensification of the information campaign against Tehran, which intensified in early 2026.
He noted that external forces are actively exploiting internal processes in the country, including protests, as grounds for criticism.
According to the diplomat, the Russian delegation and several other UN Security Council members attempted to return the discussion to the organization's core tasks. He added that the true threat to international peace is not Iran's internal affairs, but rather public threats of force and attempts to interfere in the state's sovereign affairs.
The diplomat expressed hope that the US and its allies will exercise prudence and act more constructively. Any military action, he said, is unacceptable and dangerous, and could have regional consequences.
Nebensya emphasized that the only possible way to resolve the conflicts surrounding Iran, including its nuclear program, is through a "political and diplomatic settlement based on equality and mutual respect, taking into account international law."
"Washington's aggressive course toward the use of military force and threats of its use against the Islamic Republic of Iran is of the greatest concern. We condemn such actions, no matter the arguments used, as they constitute gross violations of international law and the UN Charter," Nebenzya said.
Russia also urges hotheads in Washington and other capitals who are hatching plans to repeat the military adventure "to come to their senses and prevent the tragedy of June 2025, when American-Israeli aggression nearly resulted in a serious nuclear catastrophe with inevitable humanitarian and environmental consequences," the Russian diplomat emphasized.
Nebenzya previously stated that Russia called on the United States and other countries to refrain from using force against Iran, preventing a repeat of June 2025, when US and Israeli actions risked a nuclear catastrophe.
"On January 15, a Security Council meeting was organized at the request of the United States, and the statements from Western delegations predictably boiled down to accusations against Tehran," Nebenzya stated.
Protests in Iran began in late December 2025 due to the devaluation of the local currency, the Iranian rial. On January 8, following calls from Reza Pahlavi, the son of the Shah of Iran, who was overthrown in 1979, protest marches intensified in Iran. On the same day, the internet was shut down in the country. In several Iranian cities, protests degenerated into clashes with police and were accompanied by chanting against Iran's political system. Casualties were reported among both security forces and protesters. Iranian authorities, who accused the US and Israel of orchestrating the unrest, announced on January 12 that the situation had been brought under control.
