WARSAW: Polish farmers took to the streets and drove columns of tractors to Warsaw to protest the trade agreement between the EU and the South American bloc Mercosur. Farmers fear an influx of cheap food, lower prices for local produce, and a threat to agricultural incomes.
The protesters believe the government is not sufficiently protecting farmers' interests, despite its criticism of the deal. EU officials claim the agreement will benefit farmers by removing tariffs and opening markets to European technology.
Despite the protests, most EU countries approved the deal on Friday, with Poland, France, Hungary, Ireland, and Austria voting against.
