Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro and his wife have been captured and flown out of Venezuela by the United States, US President Donald Trump announced.

"The United States of America has successfully launched a major attack on Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolás Maduro, who, along with his wife, was captured and flown out of the country," Trump announced on social media. He said the operation was carried out jointly with US law enforcement agencies.

Trump also announced that he would hold a press conference at 11:00 a.m. local time. It will take place in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.

Earlier, a series of explosions were reported in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas. Locals reported hearing them in various parts of the city, including at Simón Bolívar Airport in Maiquetía and the port of La Guaira.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced that the United States is bombing Caracas with missiles, A24 reports. He called on the UN to hold an emergency meeting on the matter.

Furthermore, it was reported that Trump held a national security meeting at his Mar-a-Lago residence before launching the operation against Venezuela.
