A panel of Brazilian Supreme Court justices sentenced former president Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison Thursday (September 11, 2025) after convicting him of attempting a coup to remain in office despite his 2022 electoral defeat.
Hours before setting the prison sentence, Brazil's Supreme Court announced its decision to convict the former president of "conspiring against the democratic order" following his electoral defeat in 2022.
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for his attempted coup d'état following his electoral defeat in 2022. The Supreme Court ruled that Bolsonaro conspired against the democratic order to try to remain in power despite Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's victory.
Bolsonaro and the seven other defendants were found guilty of crimes against democracy, including attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d'état, criminal organization, damage to protected property, and aggravated damage. Among those convicted are prominent Brazilian political figures, such as Paulo Sergio Nogueira, former Minister of Defense, and Anderson Torres, former Minister of Justice.
