MOSCOW: Medvedev calls Trump's words about measures against Russia a theatrical ultimatum. The day before, Trump announced 100% duties on Russia in 50 days if there is no progress in the Ukrainian settlement. Medvedev calls the US president's ultimatum decorative

Deputy head of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev called the latest statement by US President Donald Trump about the possible introduction of 100% duties on goods from Russia a "theatrical ultimatum" that disappointed "belligerent Europe".

Russia does not care about the "decorative ultimatum" to the Kremlin from US President Donald Trump, said Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev.

"Trump presented a decorative ultimatum to the Kremlin. The world shuddered, expecting the consequences. Belligerent Europe is disappointed. "Russia didn't care," he wrote on his X page.

On Monday, Trump said that the United States would impose 100% tariffs on goods from Russia and secondary sanctions against countries purchasing Russian oil if a ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine is not reached within 50 days. Against this backdrop, the Russian stock market rose by 2.73% during the main trading session on Monday, sharply accelerating its growth.

A week earlier, the US president announced a "small surprise" for Russia, noting that he was dissatisfied with the actions of the Russian president in the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.

The day before, Trump announced new measures against Russia at a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Washington. According to him, the United States will impose tough restrictions - 100% tariffs - on Russia in 50 days if there is no progress in the Ukrainian settlement. According to the Republican, the US could also supply 17 Patriot systems to Europe for Kyiv.

As Spiegel wrote afterwards, Trump's "big" statement turned out to be "smaller than many had hoped", particularly in Washington and several European capitals.

Thus, Trump had a legal "sledgehammer" for a "strong blow to Russia" in the form of a bill prepared by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democrat from Connecticut Richard Blumenthal. In addition to sanctions against Russia, the document envisaged duties of 500% on imports from countries that buy Russian oil, petroleum products, natural gas, uranium and other goods.

This is Moscow's first official reaction to yesterday's statements from Washington.

On the eve of the American president's statement, Graham said that the US was going to sell Europe a large amount of weapons, "which will ultimately help Ukraine." He also shared that Congress will soon pass "the most significant sanctions package in US history," which will provide Trump with "unprecedented leverage." Among the main targets will be China, India, and Brazil, the senator noted. Graham called it "a real sledgehammer" that would "put an end to this war." Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee Alexei Zhuravlev expressed the opinion that the 100% tariffs announced by US leader Donald Trump against Russia and its partners will hit the US economy itself.
